Kirsten Izer completely captures the feeling of daydreaming alone in your bedroom about someone else in “You.” The staggered drum beats give it this feeling of trepidation, like thinking about someone from a far but not knowing how they feel about you or perhaps being embarrassed at how much you are thinking about them! The vocals in the chorus float as if in a dream adding this fantastical thrilling element. The joy of thinking of someone you love. The synth brings us to earth though, gritty and strong like the knowledge that there may or may not be something between the subject and the writer.
What makes “You” even better is Izer’s fantastic songwriting. She paints a unique picture of awkwardly knowing so much about someone (“Look at photos of you when you were two”) but not speaking as frequently (“haven’t talked in weeks”) yet still feeling a strong connection. The congruence of the instrumentals, lyrics and vocal to create this deep story is amazing. The pre chorus about distance is more gritty (kind of hinting at the strain of that) that lifts to an acapella high “You” with so much pleasure.
Izer has as show coming up in LA on March 1st at the Virgil, where she will hopefully sing “You” and a few of her other singles. She also has an EP set to be released in the spring that I’m very looking forward to. For now, I’ll just daydream while listening to “You”…
