April Jai hits us with one of the most vulnerable and honest songs she’s ever written ‘You Didn’t Notice’. Depression and anxiety crippled her for the majority of her life and when she finally began to embark on her healing journey she thought it would be straightforward and that she would never feel low again but she learned that healing isn’t a linear path and sometimes dark thoughts creep up when you least expect it. This song was written for anyone who’s ever been in a place where they didn’t notice they were slipping into a dark spiral until it was too late.
Listening to this song is absolutely heartbreaking in the most beautiful way. I’ve struggled with mental health myself and this song puts those feelings into two minutes and forty-three seconds so perfectly. Some of the lyrics that stuck with me are “Don’t know what I’m feeling / The shadows begin to seep in / Started a war inside my head / Trying so hard to play pretend, can’t even get out of my bed.”
April Jai is an incredible singer-songwriter and we can’t wait to see where she goes. Jai is a UK pop artist currently residing in London.
*Fun Fact* She tried to recreate the emotion from the demo vocals that were recorded in her bedroom in the studio but couldn’t get it right so in the final song she decided to keep the demo vocal, flaws and all, because it just felt right.
