The soulful R&B dreamy pop duo RKCB is starting their 2019 with the release of their first single, ‘Till We’re in the Sea’, off their upcoming EP ‘Shores’ (02,22,2019). The song is dreamy and melodic and overall a beautiful and interesting listen. There is incredible intricacy in the piano used to carry the space between the smooth soaring vocals. ‘Till We’re in the Sea’ unlocks a sense of soulful comfort, almost like you’re floating as you listen to it. The ethereal song covers so many aspects of life that listeners can connect to and interpret.
In the words of RKCB,
"Till We're in the Sea was inspired by zooming out of our everyday experience with nature and trying to look at a larger timeline. We wanted to ask some bigger questions about our relationship with nature as a species, as we've evolved, and what the next phase of that is. As you grow with something, whether a partner, a place, anything really, it's important to step back and take stock, and this song was us trying to do that with the world around us, and see what we're bringing to the table.”
Honestly, while the duo claims a focus on nature, I find this single a comforting love song. Not necessarily a happy one, but a song of self-awareness in a relationship and a desire to grow and acknowledge the challenges they face.
“Can we call it motion if the only thing that's moving is our line/
Drawn across the sand as if we're sifting and adjusting space and time”
This line in particular stands out to me the most as a way of seeking perspective and also the relationship that time has when you are with a person you love, time and space seems to adjust and fade away.
A bit about this duo. RKCB is a duo out of LA with quite a bit to their name. Riley Knapp and Casey Barth, whose alchemic sound fuses neo-soul, modern electronic R&B and dreamy synth-pop with avant-garde lyrics, resulting in an unparalleled sound. With a big 2018 where they had two major singles, “Alone with you Pt. 2” and “Know Love”, the duo is ready for the release of their new EP “Shores” towards the end of this month.
This duo already has a special place in the hearts of Unheard Gems team members as they recorded a song with another Unheard Gem, Ariana and the Rose, called ‘Love You Lately’ back in 2017. This isn’t their only collaboration though, this duo has worked with Tinashe, Julia Michaels, Kacy Hill & more (along eclipsing 100 million Spotify streams to their name alone),
This duo is ready to take on 2019. Already started on their tour with co-headliner Shoffy, there are still many stops left if you want to see them in your city! Check it out below:
