‘The Buzz’ by Drew Hersch is, for lack of better words, completely nauseating– in the most incredible way. Vulnerable does not even begin to describe this piece, which presents itself as if Drew Hersch is physically placing his heart, still beating, directly into your palm. The lyrics resound as more of a poem than anything else, with truly beautiful and descriptive imagery of memories that feel like you’re reliving them in live time.
The literal lyrical buildup of this song is incredibly cool— after the first chorus, we are given two verses that mirror each other in structure, with five lines that are tied together with an insane one-liner at the end. My personal favorite of the two is “Green on the ground / Take off your jacket / Feel the sun on your skin / Our little old spot, new habits / Where I showed you around / Will you show yourself out?” The delivery on that final line is intentionally raw and isolated, truly giving this song an incredible narrative voice.
Beyond the lyrical delivery, the production of this piece takes it over the top. The use of strategic sound breaks, the addition or removal of percussion, and the strategic use of silence complete this track. These choices force an emphasis on the most important and resounding lyrics and force the audience into Drew’s mind as he revisits this relationship.
Drew is an independent pop artist based in Boulder, Colorado. He pulls inspiration from artists such as Billie Eilish, Noah Kahan, and Rex Orange County. His creative process is rooted deeply in impulse— he writes and records whenever he feels inspiration strike. His work is deeply personal, and he lives to share his story. He will continue to share that story this December, with the release of his upcoming album “SUNBURNS” releasing on the sixth. With more on the way from Drew, be sure to give ‘The Buzz’ the thoughtful listen it deserves.
