Santulan Creative: All About Music Launch

Sunday, June 30th marked the launch of All About Music, the third edition of Santulan Creative’s magazine that features the artists Empress Of and Raveena on not just one but two different covers. The magazine is based on a tape where both sides are used and have different recordings: the E-side focused on Empress Of and the R-side supported by Raveena. Like a tape that is played, the magazine must be turned to the back and rotated to turn it the right way again. Each side meets in the middle of the magazine that tells you to do so. This is a really cool way to connect physical music to a physical magazine about music. I love the way the form pulls the audience in and I look forward to the articles that the magazine stores.

Santulan Creative has an impressive way of bringing a creative community together especially in the heart of ever so crowded DTLA. When I arrived at the launch, I was given a sample of my choice of Youth to the People skincare. I walked through the tight space weaving my way through people until I arrived at Kellie Yukiko's jewelry and art prints. I was in awe of their work and found myself really drawn to their earrings of pearls and flowers. Handsome Girly’s booth, just next to Yukiko’s, was also impressive; I loved their creative ruffled purse and spiky scrunchie. MORNI’s multiple racks of custom clothing had so many beautiful and intricate details I was overwhelmed.

PIZZA ANANDA made the space smell of cheese, tomato and bread which made my stomach grumble and CzarTooth had sparkly gems that made for sparkly teeth. Gulabi Henna had colorful art prints, golden shiny bookmarks and a henna artist. Finally, there was a conversation area with signs on the tables asking readers to leave their thoughts on what was their favorite thing about music on sticky notes. DJ Bianca Maieli blasted some wonderful remixes and classics as I made my way around.

Once I took everything in, I made my way to Gulabi Henna to get a henna tattoo. I had a wonderful conversation with the owner Hufsah Chapman as she drew a perfect heart on my wrist and a patch of flowers and leaves (which are just fading from my arm a week later as she predicted) about just how difficult the parking was. We both had struggled to get to the event, but were so glad we made it in the end. Writing this now, I wish I could feel the rush of love I felt surrounded by creatives all the time.

The incredible community Santulan Creatives has cultivated is highlighted not only at their event but also in All About Music. I highly recommend taking the issue home to get a taste of the special feeling that creatives can exude within the comfort of your own home or anywhere you would like to read…
