Sad girl fall is here and Tomo has submitted his entry. “Ocean Breeze” is like the ominous brother of The Paper Kite’s “Bloom”. Just subtract the whistling, replace the vocal harmonies with weary vocalizations, add strings, and decrease the tempo because of the loss of love. I told you; it's sad girl fall. I think there’s nothing wrong with sitting with your feelings during the colder months and this song is doing just that.
With descriptions of a past relationship as coming back “just like the ocean breeze.” This feels reminiscent of a summer love. A relationship that blossomed in the summer but was lost to crisp fall air. According to Tomo, the lyrics describe, “the intricate insecurities of a codependent relationship." To me, they feel like a description of how it feels to lose not only someone else, but a sense of yourself as you lose that person. Who are you if not with them? If you’re not part of a joint future with them, what is your future now? I personally am more in touch with myself the more I am urged to stay inside by the cold of the season.
This song brings out a particular moment for me as I’m sure it will do for many. It feels apt for the coming season that might be cold for some, but the warmth in our hearts and our mugs will get us through it. Ideally, don’t suppress your feelings; let it out. Thank you to Tomo for allowing us to process our feelings with him, through a song that is just as refreshing as an ocean breeze.
