Femi from New York released his new single “More or Less” on April 4.
The song’s themes center around honesty, growth, and self-worth. The following quote generalizes the lyrics the best way I can:
“You should’ve seen the signs that guy was it for you. But now you want to move on with me. Not a chance. You won’t see it now but you will soon.”
Each section expands upon each theme. The lyrics are direct and honest about Femi’s intentions. The chorus marks a pivotal moment because he sets personal boundaries against the person taking advantage of him and establishes self-respect. In the 2nd verse, he also encourages and advises self-growth instead of seeking comfort from others. Femi wrote “More or Less” in an emotional, groundbreaking way just from reading the lyrics. But the music makes the song empowering.
“More or Less” production is beautifully put together. It’s similar to a separate song, “Whispers in the Dark” by Monsta X because it brings a moving, soaring-like feel you get from driving around. After listening to the slow, steady crescendo in the pre-chorus, I expected a mezzo forte at the chorus (yes, I took music theory). The build up in the pre-chorus goes well with the lyrics' storytelling. All in all, I love the progression between the chorus and verses.
“More or Less” is perfect for a driving playlist at night. It’s also great for a cut sequence and end credits of a coming-of-age movie and drama. “More or Less” is available on all streaming platforms.
