“Insecure” by N33T |Review

“Insecure” by N33T is a alt, hyperpop-esque journey through the mind of an overthinking adolescent on the brink of adulthood.

N33T describes it as a coming-of-age project, which as a teenager myself, I recognized instantly and connected to the themes within the song. In the first verse, the narrator explains how “Maybe I’m gonna change? / It’s just so easy to stay the same / I don’t think I’d have it any other way / I’ll probably do it again, again, again,” which I interpreted as knowing that your behaviors are unhealthy, but in some warped way, you enjoy them, or at least they are part of you in a significant way. It is really easy to want to continue to slip into that state of darkness or angst. The artist himself explains how he “became a psychological hypochondriac, constantly and vigorously examining my mental state and finding any reason to become more depressed.” A person’s teenage years are extremely fascinating, because you are so intensely aware of yourself that it goes full-circle, meaning you just start to see yourself backwards. This idea of being ‘too aware’ is the overlying theme in “insecure,” since the amount of introspection leads the narrator to be self-conscious (hence the title).

The minute I first pressed play to listen to this track, it felt like I accidentally clicked on “It’s Not Living If It’s Not With You” by The 1975 (which is an amazing song), so the inspiration is clear. This is not to say it isn’t original, but the influence is apparent. Specifically, some of the guitar riffs towards the end and interspersed throughout the song, feel especially reminiscent of The 1975–which is a great touch. I wouldn’t classify this track as hyperpop, but some of the semi-maximalist/unique production details fit well the recent (somewhat) indie sleaze revival with Charli XCX’s “brat.” I’m excited to listen to more of N33T’s music and see if some of his other tracks incorporate more hyperpop aspects, since it is one of the strongest aspects of “insecure.” I can see his overall artistic journey flourishing in a really outstanding career and sound.
