"Distance" is a sincere ballad by Nicky Romero and singer/actress Olivia Holt who played Tandy Bowen formerly known as Danger in the television show, "Cloak & Dagger."
The song is about the emotional pain that comes with separating yourself from someone you used to love. Lyrics like, "timing is a fine line between lovers and strangers" and the pre-chorus in which tissues are a must, plucks at your heart, "Could've been a hundred reasons. I don't know how we got lost. I don't know how we get back. We're too far gone; don't wanna feel this."
"Distance" could be heard on the radio or a festival. However, removed from those platforms it is designed for a solo experience. In life, things will happen that cannot be explained. Breakups can be hard because they will leave you without closure and confusion. Olivia sings, "Like you're in my arms, so when you're not and now that you are, it's like you're not" the idea that love is a feeling, not an object. You can feel nothing when the person you love is next to you.
Music is therapy; it provides comfort. After I finished listening to "Distance" I cued up "Star Shopping" by the late Lil Peep, who said, "this music is the only thing keeping the peace when i'm falling to pieces."
"Distance" is about falling to pieces, but in doing so, you put pieces together, those pieces being yourself.
