Less is more, and “backlash” proves that.
The track begins with a simple, murky bassline and is paired with equally simple vocals. The angst is palpable as she sings about feeling controlled and trapped, rounding out the dark, grungy sound of the track. However, it takes on a dreamy, somewhat lighter feel as it gives way to the chorus, and she gains the confidence to break free. The simplicity of the song is what made it so captivating to me - how my attention was held so well by a simple bassline and a two-part harmony was something rare, and truly special.
Leoblu, the solo project of Julia Carlsson, is based in Berlin. She describes her sound as minimalist and full of reverbed harmonies, as well as raw lyrics meant to strike an emotional chord. Be sure to give her other tracks a listen - I know I definitely will!
