There’s something about pop with gospel leanings that always scratches an itch for me. Jack Dean’s “Angel” listeners get the auditory pleasure of lovely raspy vocals with a backdrop of choir vocals.
Dean fills the sonic space like breath fills lungs. As if the luscious vocals and reverb wasn’t enough, also brings us lyrically into a layered dynamic: his lover, quickly hot then cold then hot again, and himself, desperate for connection. If you are only thinking sonically without lyrical meaning, like I was initially, I really believed that the song was a good old love song with not much below the surface. However, with lyrics like, “you’ve got me rolling dirt deep all over again, I’m broken gain/ Got mud on my knees / Cause I’m always begging you” it’s definitely a bit more complicated.
No matter what you’re looking for, “Angel” delivers. I think if you like anything from Harry Style’s self-titled album or probably most of Hozier's discography , then you will like “Angel”. With Dean’s other single “Still On My Mind” also giving just as much, I’m even more excited for what is to come.
